The Allendale Baal Fire takes place every year on 31st December, it is a farewell to the past 12 months and has been in existence since the Dark Ages. On New Year's Eve the small town is full of visitors and down from the hill farms come the shepherds, flockmasters and farm workers to watch or take part in the Baal.

Ad Allendale per un Capodanno incendiario

È il Tar Bar'l Festival. Al confine tra Inghilterra e Scozia. Dove il nuovo anno si festeggia portando in testa botti di whisky infuocate.
Ad Allendale, nella regione inglese del Northumberland, l’arrivo del nuovo anno viene festeggiato in modo particolare: trasportando sopra alla testa una botte di whisky, riempita però con catrame a cui è stato dato fuoco. Il tutto per alimentare un gigantesco falò nella piazza della cittadina, in un rituale che ha antiche origini pagane: il Tar Bar’l Festival.

The fainting goats: a particular strange gene

Yet despite all appearances, these goats (also known as myotonic goats, "Tennessee stiff-legs," "Tennessee wooden-legs," "nervous goats" and "fall-down goats") aren't simply weak of heart or abnormally prone to fright. In fact, fainting goats don't actually faint or lose consciousness at all during these episodes. Due to an congenital (present from birth) medical condition known as myotonia congenita or Thomsen's disease, the goat's muscles tense up when the animal is startled and don't immediately relax. Think of it as a full-body charley horse, except without the pain.

The severity of the condition varies. Some fainting goats will stiffen up every time they're startled, others less frequently. Symptoms often lessen over time and some animals are able to better adapt to the condition. Younger goats are more prone to fall over and tumble when startled, but as they grow older, many eventually manage to avoid falling down altogether during an episode.

They simply run away from a threat on stiffened legs. Older goats also tend to become more secure with their environment and startle less easily.

Le Capre che svengono: uno strano caso di genetica

Potrebbe sembrare uno scherzo realizzato ad arte per far una candid camera e invece lo ‘strano caso’ delle capre che in una fattoria delle Hawaii svengono per qualche secondo accasciandosi paralizzate al suolo non solo è vero ma ha una spiegazione scientifica.
Questa curiosa oltre che rara caratteristica non è appresa ma innata ed è nascosta nel patrimonio genetico delle capre che a causa di una disfunzione genetica quando avvertono un allarme o un pericolo si accasciano al suolo con il corpo completamente paralizzato.

"Throughout our lives we are blessed with spiritual experiences, some of which are very sacred and confidential, and others, although sacred, are meant to be shared. Last summer my family had a spiritual experience that had a lasting and profound impact on us, one we feel must be shared. It's a message of love. "On July 22nd I was in route to Washington DC for a business trip. It was all so very ordinary, until we landed in Denver for a plane change. As I collected my belongings from the overhead bin, an announcement was made for Mr. Lloyd Glenn to see the United Customer Service Representative immediately. I thought nothing of it until I reached the door to leave the plane and I heard a gentleman asking every male if they were Mr. Glenn. At this point I knew something was wrong and my heart sunk.

Questi eventi, che riguardano un bambino di 3 anni, avvennero nel 1994, e sono stati raccontati da Lloyd Glenn, papà di Brian.

…Il 22 luglio di quell'anno mi stavo recando per affari nella città di Washington.

Tutto procedeva come al solito, finché non atterrai a Denver per prendere un altro aereo. Mentre prendevo i miei bagagli dal ripostiglio in alto, si sentì un annuncio in cui si chiedeva a Lloyd Glenn di contattare immediatamente il rappresentante del Servizio Clienti. Io non vi prestai attenzione finché non raggiunsi la porta di uscita dall'aereo e non udii un signore che chiedeva a tutti i passeggeri maschi se erano il signor Glenn.

In quel momento mi resi conto che qualcosa non stava andando bene ed il mio cuore ebbe un balzo.

The Winter Solstice: The Winter's Fairies - Part One

It is also called Saturnalia or Festival of Light
It's one of minors Sabbath, the celestial passage where nights are longer tha days and marks the start of astronomical winter.
This festival falls on the first calendar day of winter, much better known as the night of the Winter Solstice. This time of year was already celebrated in ancient Rome, with the Saturnalia (dedicated to Saturn), during these festivals were introduced in the celebrations of the use of candles, singing and carousing.

Yule is also an archaic term for Christmas (shown, for example, in the dictionaries of the English language, the term still appears in some Christmas carols and is still used in some dialects of Scots).

The celebration of winter solstice quickly spread throughout Europe and was born in the countryside Yule, linked to the celebration of the sun and the Mother Earth that, warmed by the sun first ray, prepare itself for future planting.

Il solstizio invernale: Le Fate dell'Inverno - Prima Parte

Chiamato anche Saturnalia, o Festa delle Luci.
E' uno dei sabba minori, il passaggio celeste in cui la notte e' più lunga del giorno, e segna l'inizio dell'inverno astronomico.


Questa festività solare cade nel primo giorno d'inverno, molto più conosciuta come la notte del Solstizio Invernale. Questo periodo dell’anno era già festeggiato ai tempi dell'antica Roma, con i Saturnali (dedicati a Saturno), durante queste feste vennero introdotte nelle celebrazioni l’utilizzo di candele, canti ed orge.

Yule è anche un termine arcaico per il Natale (riportato, per esempio, nei dizionari della lingua inglese; il termine appare ancora in alcuni canti natalizi ed è tuttora usato in alcuni dialetti scozzesi).


La celebrazione del solstizio d'inverno si diffuse rapidamente in tutta Europa e nacque così nelle campagne la festività di Yule, legata alla celebrazione del sole e della madre terra che si prepara, riscaldata dai primi raggi, alla futura semina.

La Leggenda del Vischio

Nell'antichità i druidi usavano il vischio per ottenere infusi e pozioni medicamentose. Nella mitologia norvegese il dio Balder, fu ucciso perché colpito da un ramo di vischio, tutte le altre piante avevano giurato di non recare alcun male al giovane e bellissimo dio, tutte tranne l'umile e innocua piantina del vischio.

Il perfido rivale del dio, fece in modo che un vecchio cieco, per gioco colpisse Balder con un rametto di vischio uccidendolo all'istante. In memoria del dio, i norvegesi sono soliti bruciare rami di vischio in prossimità del solstizio d'inverno, con lo scopo di allontanare la sventura e invocare la prosperità ed il benessere.

Probabilmente anche il significato oggi attribuito alla pianta deriva da queste antichissime credenze popolari; siamo soliti, infatti, donare o tenere in casa rami di vischio tra la fine del vecchio e l'inizio del nuovo anno nella speranza di proteggere in tal modo noi stessi, le persone a noi care e la nostra casa dai guai e dalle disgrazie.

Our Lady of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun

The miracle was told by Lúcia Santos and her cousins, siblings Jacinta and Francisco Marto. in the area that it would arrive on the above date at noon who were given this information by Our Lady of Fatima, one claim that most newspapers claimed was ridiculous, however, people flocked to the area on the off chance that the miracle did occur.
According to tales of the time, Our Lady of Fatima came to the three children on May 1, 1917 telling the children that she was Our Lady of the Rosary, which is another name that Our Lady of Fatima goes by, as well as a combination of the two. The woman told the children of the coming events and urged them to go tell the others.

Madonna di Fatima, Il Miracolo del Sole

Il miracolo del sole è un evento miracoloso collegato alle apparizioni mariane della Madonna di Fatima nel 1917 e preannunciato dalla Santissima Vergine ai tre piccoli (Lúcia Santos ed i suoi cugini Jacinta e Francisco Marto) veggenti nel corso delle apparizioni precedenti (iniziate il 13 maggio dello stesso anno) e precisamente il 13 luglio.

Questa promessa di un evento soprannaturale divenne di dominio pubblico e i giornali anticlericali ricamarono molto sul "promesso prodigio" che, a loro avviso, non ci sarebbe stato.

Gli Elfi

L'elfo (probabilmente dal norreno alf[a]r) è uno spirito genio della mitologia norrena e non solo. Gli elfi sono simboli delle forze dell'aria, del fuoco, della terra, dell'acqua e dei fenomeni atmosferici in generale.

Essi sono spiriti simili agli umani, alti e magri ma forti e velocissimi, volto pulito, sereno, orecchie leggermente a punta. Sono descritti con una grande vista e un udito molto sensibile. Non hanno barba, hanno capelli neri o argentei e occhi brillanti che si dice penetrino la persona fino a conoscerne i pensieri, si dice che siano dotati di telepatia.

Aggrovigliare i capelli di una dormiente, rubare piccoli oggetti, o portare un viaggiatore sulla strada sbagliata, sono stati considerati scherzi innocui delle fate. Tuttavia, sono state anche accusate di mortali comportamenti.

Hotel Del Salto, Colombia: The Haunted Hotel

Tequendama Falls (or Salto del Tequendama) is a major tourist attraction about 30 km (18 miles) southwest of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. The thousands of tourists who visit the area to admire the 157 metre (515 feet) tall waterfall and the surrounding nature, make a stop at another nearby landmark as well, the abandoned Hotel del Salto.

Circa 10000 BC, El Abra and Tequendama were found to be the first permanent settlements in Colombia. The river surges through a rocky gorge that narrows to about 60 feet at the brink of the falls. During the month of December the falls become completely dry. The falls may be reached by road from Bogotá via car or bus.

L‘hotel del Salto, in Colombia, garantisce a tutti i propri ospiti uno dei panorami più affascinanti del mondo e, per chi desiderasse il servizio completo, un salto di 157 metri fra le tumultuose acque del sottostante fiume Bogotà. Questa fatiscente struttura è edificata su una rocca sporgente nella vallata di Tequendama, che deve il nome alle suggestive cascate che riversano le proprie acque esattamente sul fiume.
