Exoplanet with longest year discovered
Astronomers have identified an extrasolar planet that takes 708 days to complete one orbit of its star.
Named Kepler421-b, the distant world is located approximately 1,040 light years away and was discovered using observations from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope.

Si chiama Kepler-421b e ruota intorno alla stella Kepler-421, guardandola da una distanza media di 1,2 Unità Astronomiche e quindi più vicino alla stella di quanto Marte non lo sia dal Sole.
La stella Kepler-421 è più fredda del nostro Sole, in misura tale che il pianeta riceve circa il 28% della radiazione che la Terra riceve dal Sole, o anche il 64% dell'insolazione di Marte. La luminosità della stella è infatti di circa il 40% di quella solare.

Per decenni abbiamo tentato di insegnare agli scimpanzé il nostro linguaggio dei segni. Oggi un team di ricercatori dell’Università scozzese di St. Andrews ha deciso di fare il contrario: imparare il linguaggio gestuale degli scimpanzé. Osservando 80 esemplari nel loro ambiente naturale, la foresta di Budongo in Uganda, gli scienziati sono riusciti a realizzare quello che definiscono un autentico “dizionario” dei gesti dei nostri cugini più prossimi.

A clutch of fossilised bones uncovered during the expansion of an airport terminal in the US may belong to the largest flying bird ever found.
The prehistoric creature had a wingspan of between 6.1 and 7.4 metres and could glide for long distances over the oceans as it searched for fish 25m years ago, according to scientists writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Shell Grotto - Margate - Kent - England
The grotto was discovered in 1835 by James Newlove, who broke through into its roof while digging a duck-pond. It is is an ornate subterranean passageway in Margate, Kent.
Almost all the surface area of the walls and roof is covered in mosaics created entirely of seashells, totalling about 190 sq metres of mosaic, or 4.6 million shells.

La misteriosa Grotta delle Conchiglie, Margate - England
La grotta fu scoperta nel 1835 da James Newlove, che sfondò il tetto, mentre scavava per creare uno stagno per le anatre. Si tratta di un passaggio sotterraneo decorato che si trova a Margate, nel Kent.
Quasi tutta la superficie delle pareti e il tetto sono ricoperti da mosaici realizzati interamente con conchiglie, per un totale di circa 190 metri quadrati di mosaico, e 4,6 milioni di conchiglie.

Quando la diga di Barossa Valley, in Australia, fu costruita tra il 1899 e il 1902, nessuno aveva immaginato e tantomeno progettato le incredibili proprietà acustiche che l’hanno resa famosa come “The Whispering Wall”, il muro dei sussurri.
Non che di motivi per essere famosa la diga non ne avesse già di per sé: è la prima diga ad arco costruita nella regione, e per un certo periodo è stata la più alta in tutta l’Australia.

Vatican recognizes exorcists' organization
VATICAN CITY, July 2 (UPI) --The International Association of Exorcists has been formally recognized by the Vatican's Holy See, an indication the Catholic Church approves of the controversial practice of exorcism.
The group, restricted to Roman Catholic priests, was founded in 1990 by six priests. They included Father Gabriele Amorth, known as the "Exorcist of Rome," who claims to have performed 160,000 exorcisms -- the ceremonial process of releasing demons from those possessed by them.

Hidden painting found under Picasso's The Blue Room
A hidden painting has been found by scientists beneath the brush strokes of The Blue Room, a 1901 Picasso artwork.
Art experts and conservators at The Phillips Collection in Washington used infrared technology on the masterpiece, revealing a bow-tied man with his face resting on his hand.
Picasso created both works in Paris during his famous blue period.
